Richie in police dash to dad's funeral

Shane Richie hitched a ride with a police officer to his father's funeral yesterday.

The 45-year-old actor, who played calamity-prone Alfie Moon in EastEnders, resorted to desperate measures after becoming stuck in traffic as he travelled to the service for his late dad Harry Roche.

It is understood that Richie asked for help getting to the church in Wembley, North London after spotting a police van parked on a hard shoulder. Meanwhile, his wife Christie and two young children Mackenzie and Lolita-Belle stayed in the family's car and arrived later.

A source told The Sun: "The service was due to start at 9.30am yesterday, but by 9.45am Shane was nowhere to be seen. He was driving up from his home in Surrey with his wife and kids, but got horribly snarled up in traffic and it looked like he wouldn't make it at all.

"It would have been a tragedy if that had happened, but then suddenly we saw a police van pull up outside the church."

The insider added: "The whole thing was worthy of a plot involving Alfie Moon."

Richie reportedly gave a eulogy and carried his father's coffin at the service. Roche passed away last week at the age of 65 following a battle with cancer.

Confirming the traffic incident, the star's spokesman said: "Shane was very grateful for the kindness shown to him by the police officer."
