EastEnders fans in sleuth mode

EastEnders fans are driving themselves to distraction trying to work out who killed Archie Mitchell.

The evil soap baddie, played by Larry Lamb, was bludgeoned to death with the Queen Vic bust on Christmas Day while 10.9 million viewers watched.

Soap forums have been bombarded with fans speculating on who they think committed the gruesome crime.

The murderer won't be revealed until Friday February 19, in a special episode to be broadcast live to celebrate the BBC1 soap's 25th anniversary.

Archie had plenty of enemies with reason enough to want him dead.

He had turned his own family, Peggy, Phil, Roxy and Ronnie Mitchell, against him with his cruel and heartless behaviour, as well as incurring the wrath of Jack Branning for pushing pregnant Ronnie.

Janine Butcher has a motive as Archie had callously dumped her on Christmas Day after using her to hatch his evil plans and Ian Beale had a reason to want him out of the way due to his threat of blackmail.

Now Bradley Branning and Stacey Slater could be suspects after viewers learned Archie attacked Stacey and now she is pregnant.

One fan called musicman099 on the digitalspy.co.uk soap forum declared: "This is going to drive me mad till February!"

Kara Tointon loved-up in panto

Kara Tointon insists she adores taking part in the great British tradition of pantomime.

The former EastEnders star, who left the soap in August, stars with her boyfriend and fellow ex-EastEnder Joe Swash, in Snow White at Bristol's Hippodrome theatre and insists she isn't at all embarrassed about swapping TV acting for a stint in panto.

Kara told The Sun: "It's really the only time we Brits get to be a bit silly and not take anything too seriously - I don't care if it's cheesy - I love cheesy!"

The 26-year-old actress played Dawn Swann in the BBC soap for four years, before she and boyfriend Garry Hobbs played by Ricky Groves left for a new life together on a barge in the summer.

Kara has been dating Joe who played her on-screen brother Mickey Miller in EastEnders for around a year.

Novice rider Marc Elliot

Marc Elliot only had three lessons when he had to learn to ride a horse in 'EastEnders'.

The actor who plays sexually confused Syed Masood in the BBC soap had to get on the animal for his character's Muslim wedding but wishes he'd had more time to master the skill.

He told website DigitalSpy: "I only had three lessons! The director will have done an amazing job making it look like I'm proficient! The horse did get a little spooked by banners and confetti, so I was going sideways for a large portion of the procession! I haven't ridden a horse since. It's a good skill to put on my CV, though."

Although Syed is set to marry his fiancee Amira Shah, his gay affair with Christian Clarke is exposed on his wedding day after his mother Zainab finds out.

However, she encourages him to go ahead with the nuptials as she doesn't want to lose face by her eldest son calling his wedding off.

Jessie Wallace's miracle makeover

Jessie Wallace feels like she has "a whole new life" after giving up drinking.

The former 'EastEnders' actress who played Kat Slater in the soap for five years until 2005 has lost over 28lbs on a strict diet and exercise regime and after curbing her hard partying ways, insists she has never felt better.

The 37-year-old star who has a five-year-old daughter Tallulah said: "I used to look in the mirror and think, 'What a mess', but now I feel like I've got a whole new life.

"My lowest point was when I was being slated for going off the rails and doing things I shouldn't have done. I got myself into a bit of a situation relationship-wise and I had terrible people around me, but I couldn't see it. My life had no focus."

The actress admits she realised she had to do something about her lifestyle after seeing unflattering photographs of herself on holiday.

She explained to Reveal magazine: "The turning point was seeing a photo of myself in Majorca. I was in denial about my weight. I'd drink beer, eat McDonalds, crumpets drenched in butter - I felt sluggish. If I'm honest, I never felt happy.

"Then I saw that picture and thought, 'Oh my God, is that what I look like?' "

Despite previously loving her partying lifestyle, Jessie insists she will never go back to her old habits.

She said: "Nothing tempts me, this is my lifestyle now. If a person became a vegetarian, you wouldn't be able to tempt them with a burger and I have the same mindset."

EastEnders Lamb missed his screen demise

EastEnders actor Larry Lamb reportedly missed his onscreen murder in the soap on Christmas Day - after his TV broke down at a crucial moment.

According to the Mirror, the 67-year-old was watching with his family while on holiday in France when the set stopped working, just seconds before his character Archie Mitchell was bludgeoned to death by a mystery assailant.

"It was a nightmare. He had been so excited as it was one of the highlights of his career," a source told the paper.

However Lamb was said to be "delighted" that the show helped the BBC trounce ITV in the Christmas ratings war once again.

Nine of the top ten most watched shows on Christmas Day were BBC programmes, with Coronation Street the only ITV show to make the list.

Another one of Lamb's shows, the comedy Gavin and Stacey, was the fourth-most watched show on the day.

EastEnders 'most-watched programme'

A typically festive EastEnders in which Archie Mitchell was murdered was the most watched television programme on Friday with nearly 11 million viewers.

The soap pulled in 45.9% of the total television audience, the BBC said, recording 10.9 million viewers on average and a peak of 11.9 million.

It was followed on the schedule by The Royle Family which attracted an audience of 10.2 million (42.5%).

Doctor Who chalked up 10 million viewers, which was a 42.2% audience share, and Gavin and Stacey 9.2 million (39.2%).

Eight of the top 10 shows on Friday were BBC broadcasts, apart from Coronation Street which came sixth with 7.9 million viewers and the Queen's speech which pulled in 5.6 million.

BBC One controller Jay Hunt said: "I am thrilled that BBC One continues to be the channel of choice for Christmas Day viewing. The range and variety of our line-up this year offered something for all audiences to enjoy."

More viewers tuned in to Christmas favourites in high definition, the most popular being Doctor Who with an audience of 343,000, and then The Gruffalo with 249,000.

This was up on last year when 120,000 watched Wallace and Gromit in HD.

BBC Director of Vision Jana Bennett said: "The BBC's commitment to providing the best possible viewing can be seen in these audience figures.

"Alongside great performances from BBC One and BBC Two I am particularly delighted that BBC HD's performance continues to go from strength to strength."

A new Mitchell to arrive in Walford

Just as Roxy and Ronnie are laying the ghost of Archie to rest, another one is set to shock them when he turns up at the end of January. It's the brother they never knew existed, Danny Mitchell.

Danny is set to cause a stir when he arrives on the day of Archie's funeral amidst a huge row. Roxy bluntly snaps that they have just buried their father only to be stunned by his response: "I think you might have buried mine too!"

The revelation stops the warring sisters in their tracks, as they've never known about their younger brother. Their mum, Glenda, packed her bags and left her daughters and husband, Archie, when she discovered she was pregnant. Not wanting her manipulative husband to control another of her children, she left for the sake of her unborn son.

The youngest Mitchell sibling is sure to set hearts racing on the Square, as this loveable rogue has bucketfuls of charm. But is Danny all he seems on the surface, or does the latest Mitchell have an ulterior motive for turning up in Walford?

Liam Bergin, who plays Danny says: "The first time I walked into Albert Square and saw the Queen Vic was a very special moment and I'll have that memory forever. All of my onscreen family have made me feel very welcome from the first moment that I met them and I am enjoying every minute working here."

Kara Tointon 'cutting down on Christmas presents'

Kara Tointon has admitted she has cut down on her Christmas presents this year.

The former EastEnders actress, who is starring alongside real-life boyfriend Joe Swash in a pantomime production of Snow White at the Bristol Hippodrome, said that as her family got bigger they decided to not buy as many gifts for each other.

"We've actually decided to chill out on the present thing because my family, we get bigger and bigger every year," said Kara.

She went on: "It's got to the point where on Christmas Eve I'm running around the shopping mall sweating and thinking 'oh my God, am I going to make it?'.

"And then all of a sudden I wrap it up and it's Christmas Day, it's all over and I haven't really enjoyed Christmas.

"So this year we've said one lovely gift each, and we'll enjoy going for dinners and enjoying the Christmas period without being ridiculous."

Kara also revealed she was looking forward to eating lots this Christmas.

"I love being at home, eating lots of food - lots of desserts," she laughed.

The actress, who plays Amira Shah in the BBC soap, even described Larry Lamb, who plays the villain, as "gorgeous".

"He's so gorgeous - but also a really nice man, really funny," she told Radio 1 Newsbeat.

The 29-year-old star is understandably upset that the 62-year-old - whose character Archie will be killed off on Christmas Day will be leaving Walford.

"I was really upset he was leaving because he's such a great part of the cast and I think Barbara Windsor and him make a good match," Preeya said.

"I did chat to him and he's really sad to leave, but he does have some really exciting projects coming up as well."

Kim Medcalf found herself overcome by emotion when she visited Thailand.

The former EastEnders actress who is 16 weeks pregnant with her first child flew to Phuket to meet children who lost their parents in the 2004 tsunami, and was reportedly moved to tears by the stories she heard.

"As a mother-to-be, it's particularly upsetting and emotional to hear what happened to them," she told The Sun.

She continued: "No child should be deprived of their innocence and forced to grow up before their time. You can see the pain is still evident beneath the surface when they talk about what happened."

Kim, who played Sam Mitchell in the BBC soap, was invited to the Thai island by children's charity Plan UK to mark the fifth anniversary of the Boxing Day disaster.

"For us, Christmas is about decorating the tree and all the trimmings, but for the victims of the tsunami, it serves as a poignant reminder of everything they have lost. It's important it doesn't become just a memory. It still affects lives today," she added.

Kara hated Dawn's wardrobe!

Most actresses love getting dressed up, but for Kara Tointon, getting glammed up as feisty barmaid Dawn Swann was a chore.

The 26-year-old, who starred in EastEnders for four years, has admitted that she's not a fan of the revealing and cleavage-flaunting outfits she wore on the soap.

Asked if she ever took any clothes home, she told Heat: "No, I did not, I hated Dawn's wardrobe!"

Since her exit from EastEnders in August, Kara who's playing Snow White in panto in Bristol - has been erasing the traces of Dawn.

One of the first things she did was to switch from the barmaid's brassy-coloured rigid up-do into a softer, golden hairstyle.

"When you're in a show like EastEnders, you're not really allowed to do anything to your appearance, so I thought when I left I'd just have a change and get rid of the Dawn thing," she said.

Nat: I haven't seen Jamie's death

Natalie Cassidy has revealed that she has never seen the EastEnders episode in which Jamie Mitchell passed away, following a car crash.

The 26-year-old, who filmed the emotional scenes as Sonia Fowler a week after her mother's death, admitted that watching it would be too "painful".

"I've never watched it and never will because I know what I was going through, and it's too painful," she told Reveal.

"I was completely numb, and I wasn't really old enough to cope with the emotions, so I went straight back to work. Within a week, I was filming the scene where Jamie (played by Jack Ryder) died in the car crash," she added.

Natalie, fresh off her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, said that she confronted her grief when EastEnders co-star Wendy Richards - who she described as a mother figure - died from cancer.

"It was so unexpected. I honestly never thought for a moment that Wendy was going to die," she said.

"I'd been round at her house, laughing and joking. We always got on so well. I think she saw a lot of herself in me and we just completely clicked."

She's now happier, having found love with transport manager Adam Cottrell.

"He's the one I want to be with forever, the one I want to have babies with," she gushed.

"He makes me feel incredible. He tells me I'm beautiful all the time."

Lamb pleased about Archie outcome

EastEnders star Larry Lamb has admitted he's pleased about what's in store for his evil alter ego Archie Mitchell this Christmas.

The Walford villain gets his comeuppance when he is bumped off in the Queen Vic on Christmas Day, which sparks a murder mystery storyline.

Larry told Reveal magazine: "Archie is an evil b*****d, so I'm glad he's going to die!"

He continued: "Luckily, people say I'm nothing like the character in real life, which is a good thing. It shows that I'm a capable actor!"

Archie has developed several enemies in Albert Square, so the suspects in the murder will be numerous and will include Peggy Mitchell, Phil Mitchell, Janine Butcher, Ronnie Mitchell and Roxy Mitchell.

Before his murder, Archie will succeed in his plot to take over the pub, and end up pushing pregnant Ronnie against the bar in the pub, which results in her going to hospital.

Larry said: "Archie can't believe the damage he's caused. Nothing goes as planned and he finds himself alone. No one wants to know him, he has caused devastation everywhere and everyone has a grudge against him."

She explained: "With Charlie leaving, obviously they aren't going to live happily-ever-after."

However, photographs emerged earlier this week of the pair posing for wedding photographs sparking rumours their characters are about to get hitched for the second time.

For now, the soap starlet is thrilled to be working closely with red-haired actor Charlie.

She explained: "I really enjoy working with Charlie. We're good mates. Viewers will be pleased too, as the question they ask me most is, 'When will Bradley and Stacey get back together again?

"If Stacey could turn the clock back and still be married to Bradley then she would do.

"She's grown up a lot and realises what's really important in life."

Telly fans set for Square eyes

If you want to be filled with festive cheer on Christmas Day, there are more obvious places to look than Albert Square.

But the soap renowned for its tales of doom and gloom is the bookies' favourite to draw in the most viewers on December 25.

Bookmakers Sky Bet have given EastEnders odds of 4/6 to be the TV show of viewers' choice on Christmas Day, with Doctor Who in second place at 7/4 and The Royle Family third, with odds of 11/2.

Perhaps it's the prospect of a Walford villain getting his comeuppance that's got fans excited on Christmas Day one disgruntled resident will murder Archie Mitchell in the Queen Vic, sparking a classic whodunnit.

Rival soap Coronation Street has been given odds of 10/1, while Emmerdale equals the Queen's speech in the betting, with odds of 150/1.

Sky Bet's entertainment betting spokeswoman Helen Jacob said: "There have been a few upsets in recent years in the top Christmas Day TV show betting, with 25/1 'Wallace and Gromit' pulling in most viewers last year and 'The Vicar of Dibley' coming out on top at 16/1 in 2006. 'EastEnders' looks hard to beat this year but perennial favourite 'Doctor Who' could just sneak it."

Body conscious Rita Simons

Rita Simons says appearing in 'EastEnders' has knocked her body confidence.

The actress who plays Roxy Mitchell in the BBC soap has always suffered with low self-esteem when it comes to her figure and admits it has become worse as she constantly sees herself on the television.

She said: "Being on primetime TV has definitely made me more self-conscious. Regardless of what anyone says, you do look bigger on TV. The number of times I hear, 'Ooh, you look so much thinner in real life.' "

Although the mother-of-two who is between a size eight and 10 sticks to a sensible diet, she admits she sometimes lets herself go.

She told Closer magazine: "Sometimes I'll nick peanuts from behind the bar in The Queen Vic. I'll have spaghetti Bolognese for lunch, Coco Pops and a glass of wine for dinner and KitKat Chunkys for snacks. Believe me, I know how to pig out!"

Patsy Palmer prefers 'EastEnders' arguments

Patsy Palmer prefers it when her 'EastEnders' character, Bianca, is arguing with on/off lover Ricky.

The actress said she prefers the chemistry between the couple who were previously married, and, it has been revealed, are set to tie the knot again next year when they're bickering, rather than getting along.

Jokingly suggesting she could have an affair with Walford wimp Billy Mitchell, she said: "I actually prefer it when Ricky and Bianca aren't together. Perhaps Bianca and Billy could have a little fling! She likes the down to earth types, but she'd end up getting bored of him pretty quickly."

Despite Patsy's feeling, the reconciliation between the two characters who have two children together, and raise two more - edges closer on Christmas day when Bianca makes a shock proposal.

Patsy, explained: "Bianca's been wanting to tell him for so long, as all the Christmas madness is going on, she feels the time is right and just blurts it out.

"Ricky looks shocked but typically for them, they're interrupted by someone. Bianca thinks she may just have missed her chance."

The couple are finally set to wed for the second time during the shows 25th anniversary celebrations next February.

Spoiler: Romance in Walford

It's the scene that EastEnders fans have been hoping for.

It didn't run smoothly first time around, but divorced couple Bradley Branning and Stacey Slater are once again tying the knot, new pictures show.

The images in the Daily Mail show Stacey and Bradley all smiles as they come out of a registry office, as Stacey's mum Jean and Bradley's dad Max throw confetti.

According to the newspaper, they are the only two witnesses at the wedding, despite Stacey's affair with Max ending the couple's first marriage.

Viewers saw the pair kiss in Friday's episode and Bradley tell his girlfriend Syd that he was staying in Albert Square rather than go back to Canada with her.

It seems to be a happy ending for the couple, after Stacey's affair, miscarriage, and struggle with bipolar disorder.

However as always with EastEnders it would appear that the romance is short-lived.

Charlie Clements, who plays Bradley, is planning to leave the soap in 2010 and executive producer Diederick Santer has promised a "big exit".

The wedding - in which Stacey appears to be hiding a bump - will be screened in the new year.

You saucy Mayor!

Writers on EastEnders had to re-jig the script to tone down the sexual chemistry when London Mayor Boris Johnson met saucy Peggy Mitchell in the Queen Vic.

An early script had pub guv'nor Peggy, played by veteran Babs Windsor, claiming she fancied twice-wed BoJo and making saucy remarks to bar pals.

But this later got watered down to her saying that her hair colour matched that of fellow blondie Boris. Boris had a cameo on the BBC soap in September, when he played himself and chatted to Peggy in the Walford Square pub.

And in the original script Peggy had her leg pulled about flirting with Eton-educated Boris, that she could become the Square's next Mrs Johnson.

Peggy replied by saying she would happily get involved with Boris, saying: "You think you're joking. But if I was 15 years younger... "

Peggy then whispered her sexy thoughts on Boris into niece Roxy Mitchell's and she was left open-jawed.

Boris has four kids with his second wife, barrister Marina Wheeler, and was fired from the Tory front bench five years ago over claims he lied about allegations he had a four-year extramarital affair with Petronella Wyatt.

Double whammy for Nina's party

There's going to be no Christmas party for the cast of EastEnders this year because of the recession.

But help is at hand in the shape of Nina Wadia, who might end up hosting a double whammy of a party.

She said: "We'll open the presents at home - my kids usually get up at six in the morning and stare at the tree. Afterwards we'll be flying to New York and then on to the Bahamas. We're meeting up with my husband's family."

Patsy's reunion wish

Bianca Jackson's wedding day is already full of strife as her mum Carol returns and the pair have a fight, but Patsy Palmer is asking for even more trouble.

The EastEnders actress who plays the feisty redhead, due to remarry Ricky in the New Year - has confessed she'd love Michael French to return to the soap as her bad dad David Wicks.

Patsy told Inside Soap magazine: "I'd love David back - Michael is great."

She added: "I also want to see Bianca's ex Dan Sullivan, return. But I'm a bit selfish the only stories I can think of for them are about me!"

It was Bianca's affair with Dan played by Craig Fairbrass that led to her falling out with her mum.

Patsy and Lindsey Coulson, who plays Carol, have already been pictured on set filming a fight scene on Bianca's wedding day.

But the actress said: "I never get bored of playing really happy stuff. The Jacksons are an amazing family and I love what the writers come up with for us. I hope they'll continue to get stronger and have a great 2010."

John gets Walford on its feet

EastEnders Christian sets Syed's heart racing, but Johnny Partridge gets him moving.

The 38-year-old actor choreographed the dance Syed Masood performs with his friends at the party before his wedding to Amira Shah, which wows Amira and Syed's mother Zainab.

But while John who has starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats in the West End is a natural, Marc admits he struggled on the dance floor.

Marc revealed to Inside Soap: "Johnny did the choreography. He spent three weeks training me, and only a day with the others involved. It took me longer to grasp it!"

It's not the first time John's got fellow soap stars dancing. Earlier this year he and Cliff Parisi, who plays Minty, showed off their moves on the BBC's Let's Dance For Comic Relief.

Bobby Davro's soap boredom

Bobby Davro got "bored" of EastEnders.

The comedian says he would have stayed longer in the BBC soap which he departed in December 2008, just over a year after making his first appearance but was unhappy with how his character, Vinnie Monks, was portrayed.

He said: "I wish it could have been longer. But the writers didn't develop him as much as I wanted and I got bored."

Although the 50-year-old star has left 'EastEnders', he is keeping busy appearing in pantomime 'Cinderella' in Milton Keynes and training for ITV celebrity skating contest 'Dancing On Ice'.

Bobby has reportedly been taking lessons on the ice since July as he is determined to win over viewers and do well in the competition.

A source said recently: "Bobby is a well-known figure from his comedy days and built up a whole new fanbase on 'EastEnders'. It will be great to see how he fares on the ice."

Letitia: I'm known as Sharon

It's nearly four years since she's been in the Square, but Letitita Dean admits that in fans' minds she's pretty much welded to the role of Sharon Watts.

The actress was one of EastEnders' original cast members in 1985, and has starred in such high-profile plots as the "Sharongate" love triangle with brothers Phil and Grant Mitchell.

She told the Croydon Advertiser: "I'm pretty much still recognised as Sharon wherever I go. I was in people's living rooms almost every night of the week so they still know me as Sharon."

Letitia has headed back to the bright lights of Walford on a number of occasions since she first left in 1995. She reprised the role in 2001, and appeared on and off until January 2006.

And she's not ruling out another return, as the door has helpfully been left open.

"I'm in Texas at the moment, so I've not been killed off. I'd never say never to it."

Sharon fans can catch her as the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Croydon's Fairfield Halls, where her brother Stephen Dean plays the Prince.

Kemp wants 'evil twin' role

The evil twin is a staple of soap opera.

Martin told Closer magazine: "I want the producers to ring me up and get me back on the show. Steve was blown up, but I could come back as his evil twin!"

Lacey Turner's fat tears

Lacey Turner burst into tears after she was described as "fat".

The EastEnders actress revealed she started crying after photographs of her wearing a bikini while on holiday in Dubai were printed in newspapers, with descriptions calling her overweight.

She said: "The only thing in the press that hurt me was being called fat. I'm not toned because I don't go to the gym, but I'm not fat. I cried when I saw the article.

"I can see how easy it is to get obsessed with weight, but I won't go down that road. I'm happy with myself. I've just got to stop worrying about what everyone else thinks of me."

The 21-year-old beauty also admitted she is "proud" she had a breast enlargement operation when she was younger.

She explained: "I didn't do it to look sexy. I felt odd and out of proportion. My body looked wrong. In my family, all the women have tiny chests. I know I was just 18, but I knew my shape wouldn't change because it's in my genes.

"I don't regret it. I think my body looks the way it should now. I'm proud I had the operation."

The brunette actress has also revealed she is quite "mild" and often wishes she would be as outgoing as her on-screen persona, Stacey Slater.

She added: "If Stacey got dressed up like this she'd be off to the nearest nightclub. I sometimes wish I was as ballsy as her, but I'm about as far from Stacey as you can get. My idea of hell is a celebrity party. I'd rather stay in and watch TV. I'm more mild than wild."

Danny Dyer's soap no

Danny Dyer turned down a role in 'EastEnders' because he thought it would take over his life.

The actor who is known for his British hardman roles on the big screen decided against starring in the BBC One show because he didn't want to commit to a job long term.

He told BANG Showbiz: "I've put the 'EastEnders' thing to bed. I went onto 'This Morning' and I explained why I didn't want to do that. Later on in life I think. At the moment, it's such a role that really embellishes your life, once you sign up to something like that, it takes over your life you have to commit to that, you have to sign a contract. That frightens me. I like the freedom of being an actor."

While the 32-year-old hunk loves acting, he sometimes wishes he had opted for a better paid career.

He explained: "I've made a real point in my career to make movies. And it's a tough thing to do, to go down that route, because there's not a lot of money in movies, people think there is and there isn't, especially not in British movies, so you have to pick and choose your movies as much as you possibly can and try and shine in them. You're not as restricted in movies, you can make a movie about anything."

Danny Dyer's Football Foul-Ups DVD is available to buy now.

Louisa bags Albert Square sign

Louisa Lytton has revealed EastEnders cast members get a signed Albert Square sign when they leave the soap.

The 20-year-old actress who played Ruby Allen in the BBC show from March 2005 to November 2006 told FHM magazine about the rituals that happen when an EastEnder departs.

Louisa said: "You get an Albert Square sign that everyone writes a message on and then on your final day the whole cast and crew come on set and you give a speech, and then you're gone."

The soap star, who went on to appear in The Bill and now has a part in the new American Pie movie, said leaving EastEnders was very hard for her.

She said: "My last day on set I was so emotional. About a week and a half later I went to Mexico, and every day on the beach I was thinking 'I'll never work again'. It's hard leaving a soap when you're 17."

Dales bosses praises EastEnders plot

Emmerdale's series producer has praised rival soap EastEnders for its "fantastic" handling of its bipolar storyline.

Gavin Blyth, who took the helm of the rural soap in January, said he takes his hat off to the BBC One show, even though he tries not to compare the two shows.

He told Digital Spy: "I don't tend to 'look over the neighbour's fence' to see what they're doing! EastEnders' bipolar storyline has been done fantastically well, though."

He added: "Any time a soap tackles an issue-led story but retains the truth of a character and story, you have to take your hat off to them."

In Albert Square, Stacey Slater battled bipolar disorder and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act

Her mental health problems followed her mother Jean's own struggle with bipolar.

The two actresses recently collected Mind's 'Making A Difference' trophy, awarded to EastEnders at the Mental Health Media awards.

Bianca's mystery cash

We all know Soapland isn't quite the same as real life.

Take Bianca Jackson, for example. The cafe worker may have a lot to worry about but she never seems to be strapped for cash, despite having four kids to provide for.

Actress Patsy Palmer, for one, sometimes wonders how she does it.

Patsy told Inside Soap magazine: "Bianca hasn't got any money - and I do wonder where she gets her cash from sometimes - but you never hear her talking about benefits. I think it's a really positive message that she gets out there and has a job and everything."

In the soap, Bianca is set to support step-daughter Whitney through the trial of her former fiance Tony King, who abused Whitney.

Patsy, revealed she is very close to Shona McGarty, who plays Whitney.

She said: "I spend a lot of time with Shona. She stays with me sometimes, and it's nice to be able to give somebody advice when they're learning and say how it was for me at that age.

"Shona's such a clever girl and works really hard. You forget sometimes she's only 18 years old - she's brilliant!

"She's the same age as my son Charley, so I do feel very protective of her."

Tough times for Bianca Jackson

Patsy Palmer's alter ego faces a "traumatic" time on EastEnders.

The 37-year-old actress who plays Bianca Jackson in the BBC soap returned to the show 18 months ago after she first left in 1999, and said things couldn't get any worse for the fiery mum-of-four.

Bianca struggles to support her step-daughter Whitney played by Shona McGarty as she faces her abuser in court, Tony King, who also happens to be Bianca's former fiance.

Patsy said: "A different side of Bianca comes through with the court case. She really wants to be a good mum and help Whitney through it.

"She knows how traumatic it's going to be for the poor girl, so another part of her just kicks in - which is unusual for Bianca, because she's usually very self-centred!"

Patsy who has faith in her character's ability to keep it together said a different side of her alter-ego shines through in the coming weeks.

She told Inside Soap magazine: "Bianca feels really guilty for bringing Tony into their home in the first place, but she's putting her own feelings aside for Whitney's sake.

"Bianca has to try to convince Whitney that it's ok to feel all of these things, but at the same time, help her to understand what actually happened, that Tony has committed a terrible crime."

A Lytton more drama, please!

When Ruby Allen left EastEnders in 2006 it was a quiet affair.

Now, reflecting on her time in Albert Square, Louisa Lytton has said it might have been nice to have had a "massive and dramatic" exit from the show.

But the actress, who has since gone on to star in an American Pie spin-off film, said it would have been too "heavy" if she had been killed off, as the character's dad Johnny had just died.

Louisa told FHM: "I left EastEnders in the back of a taxi with my dad's ashes on my lap, but something massive and dramatic would have been pretty cool.

"But my telly dad had just died, so I couldn't go with him, unless I died at the same time, which would have been a bit heavy, even for EastEnders."

Louisa has previously confirmed it was not her decision to leave.

She told the magazine: "To be honest, it's easier to be written out than to make the decision to go. It's not your decision, so if you don't work for six months, it's not your fault."

Streaker flashes Babs

EastEnders is sometimes accused of being a tad depressing.

But a cheeky builder brought some fun to the set when he stripped off and bared his body in front of Barbara Windsor.

While the veteran actress, who plays Peggy Mitchell, was filming scenes alongside Cheryl Fergison (Heather Trott), construction worker Joe Wainwright reportedly whipped off his overalls and jacket to reveal a gold posing pouch.

According to The Sun, as he was led away, an unimpressed Babs giggled: "He didn't even do it properly - he kept his pants on."

Joe pulled the prank as the cast filmed wedding scenes at a church in St Albans, Herts.

A show source told the newspaper: "It was quite a laugh and didn't cause much of a stir. But it was a very cold day, so he was certainly a brave soul."
