16.6m viewers tune into EastEnders

Friday night's live episode of EastEnders, which saw Stacey Branning revealed as Archie Mitchell's killer, pulled in 16.6 million viewers, the BBC said.

Fans were kept waiting until the final minutes of the 25th anniversary programme to discover the identity of his killer which followed weeks of feverish speculation.

EastEnders Executive Producer Diederick Santer said the dramatic audience rating was "the icing on our silver anniversary cake."

Speaking after the show, actress Lacey Turner described her surprise on discovering her character's role in Archie's death.

"I honestly couldn't believe it! I had no idea and didn't for one minute think it would be Stacey," she said.

"It's funny as usually you are told when you get such a big storyline but this really must be the best kept secret in EastEnders history as we have all been trying to guess for weeks now."

And she said she only discovered her character was to be revealed as the killer about twenty minutes before the show aired.

"I got a call to go and see Diederick about twenty minutes before we went live. We all knew that he was going to see Archie's killer but I didn't think for one second that it would be me," she said

"To be honest it still hasn't sunk in and I can't believe that I was the one who killed Archie Mitchell!"

The actress said she had been avidly looking for clues which might point towards the culprit but had never suspected it would be Stacey.
