Alfie tops popularity poll

Maybe fans are feeling all warm and fuzzy at the prospect of his return to Albert Square, but Alfie Moon has topped a poll of EastEnders' most loved characters.

Lovely Alfie, played by Shane Richie, scooped 42 per cent of the vote in a survey of 2,300 people.

He was closely followed by wife Kat, who nabbed 36 per cent of the vote and is also heading back to Walford this year.

Curly-mopped Nigel Bates came third, and hard man Grant Mitchell came fourth in the poll by, which asked fans to name the character they would most like to share a takeaway with.

Somewhat surprisingly, the fifth most popular takeaway companion was Wellard, Robbie Jackson's beloved dog, who is now sadly deceased.

Everyone's favourite pub landlady Peggy Mitchell took sixth place, followed by Arthur Fowler, Dot Branning, Ethel Skinner and Pat Butcher.

On the other side of the coin, the least popular Square character was Janine Butcher, who nabbed a whopping 73 per cent of the vote in the most hated list, compiled to mark the soap's 25th anniversary.
