EastEnders star to have surgery

EastEnders actor Derek Martin is to undergo surgery for a new knee, but said his condition will be written into his storylines.

Derek, who plays kindly Charlie Slater in the soap, is to have an operation later this year, and hopes it will help viewers who are in a similar situation.

He said: "My operation will probably be in the middle of May and then hopefully you'll see Charlie on crutches."

The 76-year-old put his knee troubles down to old age, playing football and lugging meat around London's Smithfield Meat Market, where he used to work.

He said one of the good things about the Walford show is that it tackles real issues people can relate to.

"It makes people aware of things that happen. They watch it and think 'Oh, that happened to someone I know, and if they go to the doctors or hospital they'll hopefully be cured.'"

He added: "That's why we do a lot of good and win a lot of awards."

Doctors offered Derek the chance to watch his operation, but he would much rather be unconscious.

"They said we can numb you from the waist down and you sit up. I said 'What, with all the sawing? We're going back to Nelson's day! No, put me out!'" he said.
