Stacey did it!

It's been one of the most talked-about soap guessing games since the "Who Shot JR?" storyline in Dallas.

But EastEnders fans can finally stop tearing their hair out as Stacey Branning has emerged as the killer of Archie Mitchell.

Stacey, played by Lacey Turner, made the confession at the end of the soap's first ever live broadcast, which marks its 25th anniversary.

She announced "I killed did it. It killed Archie" to a stunned Max Branning moments after her new husband Bradley plunged to his death from an Albert Square building after being chased by police.

Before he was killed on Christmas Day, Archie had turned most of the Square against him. Stacey had particular reason to hate him as he raped her while she was struggling with bipolar disorder.

Cast members rehearsed ten possible endings, and Lacey was only told of her character's guilt 30 minutes before the episode was broadcast.

And if the pressure wasn't enough to deal with, she was also struggling with a bad throat in the run-up to the show.

Her voice remained largely intact as she delivered her substantial chunks of dialogue, but the courageous actress was too ill to appear on the BBC's behind-the-scenes show straight after the broadcast.

Tonight's episode went largely smoothly, although Scott Maslen, who plays Jack Branning, stumbled over his lines in his opening scene and the odd blurred camera shot was glimpsed.

Afterwards, executive producer Diederick Santer, who spent nine months planning the episode, declared the show was "everything I wished for and more."
