Windsor: Theatre's my first love

EastEnders matriarch Barbara Windsor has revealed she's considering a return to the stage once she leaves the soap later this year.

Asked at the Olivier Awards, where she presented a prize, if she would consider treading the boards of the West End again, she said: "Yes of course, most certainly, but I don't know what I could do."

She went on: "I'd be very nervous, because it's been 14 years since I've last done theatre, and that was panto."

Barbara has played Queen Vic landlady Peggy Mitchell since 1994, but described theatre as her "first love".

Over the course of her career, the 72-year-old has appeared in productions of the Threepenny Opera, Oh, What a Lovely War! and Calamity Jane.

"I'm really privileged to be invited tonight," she said. "I get very excited at the Olivier awards - it's theatre, theatre darling.

"I love it, you know I do, it's my first love."
