Taylforth: Kathy could help Phil

Gillian Taylforth has said Kathy Beale could help sort out Phil Mitchell's troubles in EastEnders.

The 55-year-old, who played Phil's ex-wife for two decades, reckoned she would be perfect to put the troubled mechanic back on the straight and narrow.

"It sounds as though everything is going downhill for Phil again, doesn't it? If Kathy was still alive, I think she'd get in there and sort it all out - she was always like that, wasn't she?" she told Inside Soap.

Gillian, who was one of the original cast members before she left in 2006, has fond memories of her alter-ego.

"Good old Kathy, always someone to rely on. She was really a very strong character and I did like that about her," she continued.

"Kathy would do anything for her family and she'd easily sort all those problems out for Phil!"

The actress, who has since appeared in The Bill and Footballers' Wives, revealed she was disappointed when she found out Kathy would be killed off in a car crash.

"A producer phoned to tell me, and my first response was, 'Oh! Do you have to?'," she recalled.

"I didn't think it was the wisest move to have made because there was a lot more that could have been done with Kathy. It was the show's choice though, and that's just the way it goes," she added.
