EastEnders' Tanya given cancer plot

EastEnders' Tanya Jessop is set to battle cervical cancer on the soap.

Soap bosses have won praise from cancer charities for helping to raise awareness, after it was revealed the newly married mother-of-three, played by Jo Joyner, will be diagnosed with the condition this summer.

Robert Music, director of Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, said: "We think it is fantastic that EastEnders as decided to highlight the issue. We hope it will raise awareness."

Tanya has had plenty of trauma in her life. Her first marriage collapsed when she discovered husband Max Branning was having an affair with their daughter-in-law Stacey Slater and she attempted to kill him by burying him alive.

But she will face her biggest challenge when she battles cervical cancer.

EastEnders' producer Bryan Kirkwood said: "We have worked closely with experts to ensure we accurately portray this sensitive issue."
